38 year old Chris Carpenter, 95-44 for the Cardinals over nine seasons, three of which were mostly lost to injuries has decided to retire. He was the National League Cy Young Award winner in 2005, when he went 21-5.

General manager John Mozeliak, who announced Carpenter’s decision along with manager Mike Matheny’s contract extensionduring a news conference at Busch Stadium, said the club has offered Carpenter an off-field position.

Carpenter will speak with the media sometime after Thanksgiving.
