Missouri is in the midst of one of its great fall traditions — deer season. Part of that tradition is the Share the Harvest Program, now in its 21st year. Governor Nixon makes it his own personal custom to donate a deer to the program.
Travis McLain, with the Department of Conservation says hunters find the program easy to work with, as they can donate all or part of a deer; and depending on the area they hunt in, all the processing cost may be paid for by the processor. In 2012, more than 318,000 pounds of venison went to food pantries throughout the state.
