One Republican has made his candidacy for Attorney General official. Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Kurt Schaefer has announced he will seek the office currently held by Chris Koster, in 2016.

Schaefer, 47, is a former assistant Missouri attorney general and special assistant United States attorney. He is in his second term as a central Missouri senator out of Columbia.

As an attorney in private practice Schaefer has also served as a deputy director and general counsel of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, special counsel to the governor and special counsel to the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

He becomes the first Republican to officially announce his candidacy for the office, which the GOP have not held since 1993.

Schaefer is a married father of three and is a St. Louis native.

At least two other legislative Republicans are anticipated to formally announce their runs for the office; Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Glendale) and House Speaker Tim Jones (R-Eureka).  Jones hinted at his candidacy to Missourinet in July.
