“What can you say? I pitched terrible and that’s why we lost the game,” said pitcher Adam Wainwright, after the Cincinnati Reds scored nine runs on the Cardinals ace in the first two innings of a 10-0 loss for the NL Central leaders.

The poor start was way out of line for Wainwright, but not all that surprising. Wainwright had worked at least seven innings his previous eight starts and was coming off a complete game against the Braves, where he threw 128 pitches.  Wainwright disputes that claim.

The loss was historic. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Wainwright allowed 9 ER before recording 4 outs, and became just the third Cardinals pitcher in the last 100 years to give up nine earned runs before getting four outs. Jason Marquis was the last back in 2006 at Chicago against the White Sox.
