Just after announcing that left-hander Marc Rzepczynski was optioned to Triple-A, the Cardinals traded him to the Cleveland Indians for Minor League shortstop Juan Herrera. The Tribe will pick up the remainder of Rzepczynski’s $1.1 million contract this season.

Rzepczynski played a big role for Tony LaRussa on the 2011 World Series championship tea, but hasn’t done much since. In 2012, he had a 4.24 ERA. This season he gave seven runs on 13 hits in his first nine outings and was sent to Memphis before April ended. He was just recalled last week and made two more appearances.

The 20 year old Herrera was signed out of the Dominican Republic and is playing in the short-season New York-Penn League where he is hitting .275. The Cardinals will keep him in the same league.
