Runners begin the final leg of the Show Me Games Torch Run leading up to tonight’s opening ceremonies in Columbia.

Gov. Jay Nixon kicked off the final leg of the 2013 Show Me State Games Torch Run on the steps of the Capitol this afternoon as the Governor encouraged Missourians to participate in the Games and join him and the First Lady in completing the 100 Missouri Miles Challenge, which was launched in celebration of the state’s distinction as “Best Trails State” and to encourage Missouri families to enjoy the outdoors.

The challenge invites Missourians to complete 100 miles of outdoor physical activity by the end of the year. Already, more than 200,000 miles have been logged by over 5,400 participants as a part of the 100 Missouri Miles Challenge.

“The Show-Me State’s trails are an award-winning resource that can be enjoyed by all Missourians, and this includes the nearly 1,000 miles of trails in Missouri State Parks,” said Gov. Nixon. “Our trails system is a great way to experience the natural and cultural wonders that can be found in our parks and historic sites, which consistently rank as some of the best in the nation.”
