The St. Louis Cardinals have the best record in baseball. The one sure way to beat them is to take them into extra innings. The Cardinals fell to 0-4 in extra inning games this season, after Paul Goldschmidt hit a run-scoring single in the 14th inning to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 7-6 win over the Cardinals.

A.J. Pollock hit a three-run homer for Arizona, that gave the D-Backs a 4-1 lead, but the Cardinals fought back. Allen Craig homered in the fourth and Shane Robinson hit a two-run shot in the fifth to bring the Cardinals to within 6-4. RBI singles by Yadier Molina in the sixth and Carlos Beltran in the seventh, knotted the game at 6-6.

Michael Wacha’s second time out was not as good as his debut. He allowed ten hits and one walk, while only striking out three in his 4.2 innings worth of work. Baseball always evens out. As much as Wacha deserved a win in his first start, he certainly could have been left with a loss in this one, but the Cardinals offense continues to punish opposing pitching. The Cardinals finished with 14 hits on the night.

Interesting side note.  Matt Carpenter tied a major league record by getting hit by pitches in three separate at-bats.
