Today is the Veteran’s Day holiday, but at the Missouri Veteran’s Commission, Director Larry Kay says for them, every day is Veteran’s Day.
Missouri Veteran’s Commission Director Larry Kay says it’s important for people to realize the cost of freedom and the continuing price we are paying today by honoring our living Veteran’s for their service and sacrifice to this country.
“Veteran’s Day is also just a very personal time for many people,” Kay says. “And in some ways it’s a more awkward day, than Memorial Day. Memorial Day is when we recognize those veterans who have died,” he says.
He says it’s a special day to recognize veterans as a group and to recognize their sacrifice and service.
“Over time, Veteran’s Day has really come to be a day that we recognize veterans who are still alive and we try to turn to them and thank them for all that they have done and for their service and their sacrifice,” he says. “And I like to take that a step further and recognize their families and their children,” he says. “Because they too jointly sacrifice in that effort and I think even today, it’s more so than it was in the past.”
Kay says Veteran’s Day is a time to thank those who have put their life on the line for the greater good of others. “In this community and in central Missouri especially, there are so many different things going on to recognize veterans,” he says.
Everything from breakfasts to programs at schools to civic events and parades are being held in honor of Veteran’s Day and adds that it’s important for people to realize the cost of freedom and the continuing price we are paying for it today.
