The Cardinals’ bats ran into a buzz saw on Sunday night as Giants starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong struck out nine over seven innings, and Chris Carpenter got rocked early in a 6-1 loss, forcing a decisive game 7 on Monday night.  Vogelsong held the Cardinals hitless through 4.2 innings and gave up the lone run after a two out double by Carlos Beltran and a single between third and short in the sixth.

However, it was too little, too late after the Giants scored a run in the first and four more in the second. It was the fourth time this series, San Francisco has scored four runs in an inning.

Chris Carpenter managed to last six innings and struck out six as just two of the five runs he allowed were earned. In the second, an error by Pete Kozma, allowed Brandon Belt to score after he led off the inning with a triple. With two outs, Marco Scuttaro doubled and Pablo Sandoval singled. Scuattaro is hitting .458 in this series.

Game three starters Kyle Lohse and Matt Cain will square off on Monday night. First pitch will be just after 7 p.m. CT.
