Detroit starting pitcher Doug Fister set an AL record by striking out nine straight Royals hitters in the Tigers 5-4 win. The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the ninth after the Royals rallied from a 4-0 deficit.   The Royals made five errors, including one that loaded the bases in the ninth. Alex Avila hit a grounder to first baseman Brayan Pena, who made a diving stop and got an out at first, but had no play at home, handing Tim Collins the loss.

Fister was one strikeout away from Tom Seaver’s major league record of 10 in a row. Fister struck out Salvador Perez to end the fourth, and his streak ended in the seventh when Perez grounded out. He finished with 10 strikeouts in 7.2 innings.  The Royals rallied with three runs in the eighth inning and tied the game in the ninth on Billy Butler’s solo homer off Joaquin Benoit.
