Walgreens is closing seven competing drug stores in Missouri.

Walgreens says it’s buying the stores in Jefferson City, Joplin, Webb City, Carthage and Neosho from USA Drug. The company says the stores will be closed because of the size of the market and their proximity to other Walgreens and USA Drug stores in the region. Some stores, such as Linn Drug in Linn, will remain open because the nearest Walgreens is 20 miles away.

Walgreens says it will acquire and close 144 stores currently operated as USA Drug, Super D Drug, May’s Drug, Med-X and Drug Warehouse in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
