Georgia freshman running back Todd Gurley could start this Saturday in Columbia against the Missouri Tigers. Gurley became the first Bulldog freshman since 2004 to run for 100 yards in his first game.
Gurley ran for 100 yards on only eight carries in Georgia’s 45-23 opening win over Buffalo, after starter Ken Malcome left the game with a left hand injury. Another freshman, Keith Marshall, had 10 carries for 46 yards.
While Richt had no injury updates on Sunday and he didn’t name a starting running back yet, he indicated Gurley will get his fair share of touches. “He’ll definitely get the ball, that’s for sure,” Richt said.
Mizzou’s Marcus Murphy set a school record by returning two punts for touchdowns in the same game. He also tied an SEC record, joining seven other players in SEC history to accomplish this feat. Murphy is halfway to the season record of four, held by Arkansas great Joe Adams and Kentucky return specialist Derek Abney.
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said starting quarterback Connor Shaw can can barely lift his right arm and will miss the next few days of practice. was diagnosed with a deep bone bruise, after he took a helmet to his right shoulder and back in the Gamecocks’ season-opening, 17-13 victory at Vanderbilt last Thursday night. There is no damage to the shoulder joint, but Shaw won’t practice until at least Wednesday and that puts his status for Saturday’s home opener against East Carolina in doubt.
While Florida has questions marks at quarterback with their in-house battle for the starting job between Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett, senior running back Mike Gillislee’s career day helped the Gators get past Bowling Green 27-14 on Saturday. Gillislee picked up his his first career 100-yard rushing game, finishing with 148 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.
Alabama junior cornerback Dee Milliner was selected as the Walter Camp Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Crimson Tide’s 41-14 victory over No. 8 Michigan in the Cowboys Classic.
Milliner, from Millbrook, Ala., recorded five tackles with one interception while breaking up four passes. He returned the interception 35 yards to the Michigan 17-yard line, setting up the Tide’s third score of the first quarter for a 21-0 lead. Milliner helped limit the Wolverines to just 268 yards of total offense.
