Seattle’s Casper Wells hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run triple in the second, as the Mariners won 9-4 over the Royals on Monday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Royals starter Jonathan Sanchez was battered for seven runs in 1.1 innings as Justin Smoak also had a two-run homer off Sanchez (1-6). Ichiro Suzuki added an RBI triple and Dustin Ackley homered for one of the worst offenses in the American League. Sanchez drew much attention on Kansas City sports radio stations after the All-Star game when former Royal Melky Cabrera grabbed MVP honors. Cabrera was traded to San Francisco for Sanchez, which at the time seemed like a good trade, but it is obvious the Giants got the better end of the deal. Some of the numbers on Sanchez include:

No start has lasted past the sixth inning since May 28 (of 2011) and Sanchez hasn’t allowed fewer than four runs since early June. His ERA is up to 7.76, and he doesn’t seem to have any answers.

“When you work four days in a row to make a start and it doesn’t work, it’s kind of frustrating,” Sanchez said. “What can I say? I’ve got to look forward and see what happens.”
