Former Cardinal Scott Rolen’s tiebreaking bases-loaded single in the eighth inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 4-2 victory and three-game sweep of the Cardinals on Sunday night, leaving Cincinnati alone in first place in the NL Central and the Cardinals 4.5 games out and in third place.
Rolen’s two-out single off Mitchell Boggs snapped a 2-2 tie after Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook ran into trouble. Westbrook walked Joey Votto with one out, threw a wild pitch and hit Brandon Phillips on the arm, ending his outing.
For the second game in a row, a former Cardinal came back to haunt the team. On Saturday, Ryan Ludwick hit a walk-off homer. Great American Ballpark had a playoff type atmosphere as Aroldis Chapman fanned the side in the ninth for his 13th save in 17 chances.
Yadier Molina drove in both runs for the Cardinals. His double in the second made it a 1-0 game and his career high 15th homer in the 6th off Reds starter Homer Bailey tied the game at 2-2.
