Missouri soon will have a new law protecting highway workers not working in construction zones.  Governor Nixon has signed the bill that tells motorists they have to slow down and pull into the next lane if they see a highway crew working on the roadside.

State Maintenance Engineer Beth Wright says it protects a lot of roadside workers helping with roadside emergencies as well as doing surveys and building or repairing signs or similar work.

The law is similar to one passed several years ago requiring motorists to make way for police cars and other emergency vehicles on the roadside.   It goes into effect in late August.
