A company searching for months for a place to run a horse-slaughtering plant has settled on Rockville, in western Missouri’s Bates County. Unified Equine Missouri will renovate a closed meat processing plant. A spokesman for Unified Equine says the plant is in an area that needs jobs and in an area with the greatest number of horses to be processed.

The plant could open in late summer. It would be the first horse-slaughter plant to open since Congress lifted the federal ban on the practice late last year.
