The state senate wants to mandate a new system of funding for our colleges and universities within two years.
Maryville Senator Brad Lager has had enough of what he calls the “insanity” of the state’s funding system for higher education. Debate in the senate was locked down for almost two days this week because a senator did not like that idea that Southeast Missouri State University might get an extra two-million dollars, and argued that the extra money would throw the current higher education funding out of whack.
Some senators think it already is out of whack, including Lager, who has won approval of a provision saying the state will adopt a higher education funding formula by fiscal 20-15. The legislature is working on fiscal ’13s budget now.
Elementary and secondary education already get state aid through a funding formula.
The House still must approve the idea before the bill goes to the governor.
