An amendment in the Missouri House would make it easier and less expensive to ship radioactive material through the state. Ontario, Canada-based Nordion Inc. would no longer pay fees or face inspections in Missouri for shipments of cobalt-60, a radioactive material used to sterilize medical equipment. Opponents say the measure protects big business while putting public health and safety at risk. Supporters says the shipments have already been deemed safe upon entering the U.S. at the Canadian border. Nordion sent 40 shipments of cobalt-60 through Missouri last year.
