A national study of the well-being of Americans says Missouri is one of the most miserable states in the country. The Gallup-Healthways well Being Index, which makes that rating, relies on statistics on work environment, household income, obesity, and physical health for its rankings. The national index is 66.2 on a 100-point scale. Missouri is at 64.8. Hawaii is the best at 70.2. The study says Missouri has the 11th highest smoking rate in the country. Life expectancy here is 77.4 years, the 12th worst in the country.  Missouri also is in the top 20 in heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
