17 year old Forrest Robert Varney, a junior at Spokane High School, (located 25 miles south of Springfield) died after collapsing during a morning basketball practice on Wednesday.  The team just started practice after a Tuesday night game, finishing their stretches and warm-up laps when Varney collapsed on the court. First year coach Larry Brown who was just certified this past fall began CPR immediately.

The Highlandville Fire Department arrived within minutes, but Varney was pronounced dead at Cox South hospital in Springfield later in the morning. Click here to read more on how the town is coping with the devastating news.
