Senator McCaskill will announce her plans today for keeping rural post offices open, and for retaining six-day delivery for the next four years.

She’ll make her announcement in Kansas City. But she’s already said she wants to keep local post offices from being closed when the postal service does not present local communities with options. She wants to cut the payments into the account for future retirees’ health benefits by more than half for a time and then have the government subsidize the service if it is still not self-sustaining.

McCaskill hopes to add her ideas to the 21st Century Postal Service Act that is before Congress.

Congress controls major parts of Postal Service operations but does not provide it with any funding.
