Two days after signing shortstop Rafael Furcal to a two-year deal, the Cardinals wrapped up second baseman/outfielder Skip Schumaker to a two-year deal as well. The team did not offer a contract to Ryan Theriot.

The 31 year old hit .283 in 117 games last season, including a .299 mark after the All-Star break. He batted .381 in the playoffs and had the game-winning RBI in the decisive fifth game of the National League Division Series against the Phillies.

He made 89 starts at second base last season and five in the outfield.
