The former sheriff’s deputy / jailer who is suspected of shooting his ex-wife, her boyfriend, taking his two-year-old son and then leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in a shootout will likely be charged with the crimes today.

Marvin Rice, 44, of Salem is suspected of bursting into his ex-wife’s home early Saturday evening and demanding custody of their son. He then reportedly shot to death 32-year-old Annette Durham and 39-year-old Steven Strotkamp.
Dent Co. Prosecutor Sid Pearson tells Missourinet he will meet with the Highway Patrol today and expects to file murder charges immediately after. He said he could not comment on any other details surrounding the crime at this time.
He led authorities on a high-speed chase up Highway 63, which continued on Highway 50 and into Jefferson City.
Police cornered him at the Capitol Plaza hotel, where shots were exchanged and Rice was shot twice and wounded before being taken to a hospital in Columbia, where he is listed in fair condition. One of the shots was fired by a Jefferson City policeman, the other by a Cole Co. deputy. Both are on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
No one else was injured in the gunfire. There were, however, several hundred people at the hotel, including a JCMG Christmas party and a traveling hockey team. The hotel management has thus far declined to comment on the incident.
