Three killed on Mo. roads over Thanksgiving weekend

Three fatal traffic crashes were investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol over the four-day weekend, which began Wednesday evening and ran through midnight Sunday. That’s down from seven fatalities last year, and is fewer than even a typical weekend, which results in around three to six fatalities, the Patrol says.

The Missouri Highway Patrol investgated 368 traffic crashes over the four-day holiday weekend, three of which were fatal.

“We needed a good weekend,” Lt. Jon Hotz says, “for whatever reason, last weekend we had 12 fatal crashes across the state and that was just a regular weekend.”

He says there’s really no rhyme or reason that contributes to the variance in numbers from one weekend to the next so long as weather or holiday travel and crowded roadways aren’t factors.

Hotz points out that none of the victims were wearing a seatbelt, and urges motorists to buckle up and pay attention to the road. He says this becomes even more important and winter weather is fast approaching.

“We know that at some point were going to have that first snowstorm,” he says. “We want everyone to drive at a speed that’s appropriate for those conditions once we do see the weather deteriorate.”

The Patrol also investigated 365 crashes, which included 125 injuries. Troopers arrested 126 people for driving while intoxicated. Accident totals parallel 2010′s numbers, but DUI arrests were down. Last year, the Patrol investigated 364 crashes, which included 114 injuries; 144 people were arrested for DUI.

Those killed this year were Leonard Bass, 48, of Warrenton; Dylan Simmons, 17, of Sikeston; and Mary Carlock, 51, of Princeton.

Bass and Carlock were both traveling alone when their cars ran off the road. Simmons was driving another teenage passenger, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The passenger was also not wearing a seatbelt, the Patrol reports.

Hotz says the number of fatalities could change if late deaths occur, or if other law enforcement departments report fatal traffic crashes.

The Patrol did not follow up on or report any boating accidents during the same time period.

Missouri, Missouri State VB head to nat’l tournament

The Mizzou volleyball program was selected for its second consecutive NCAA Tournament and 10th in the last 12 seasons as the NCAA announced its 64-field tournament. The Tigers will play Florida in the opening round at Northern Iowa, who earned the No. 6 national seed. Mizzou played the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament at Northern Iowa last season before advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16.

The Missouri State volleyball team earned a spot in its seventh NCAA Tournament in the last nine seasons Sunday, parlaying its 22-8 season and No. 42 ranking in the RPI into an at-large selection. The Bears will begin tournament play at 15th-seeded Pepperdine (22-6) on Thursday, Dec. 1, in Malibu, CA. First serve is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Central.

Missouri moves up, SLU moves into basketball polls

After big wins against Notre Dame and #18 California at the CBE Classic in Kansas City and Sunday’s 88-59 win over Binghamton, the Misssouri Tigers basketball team moved up to #13 in the Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 Poll. The Tigers improved to 6-0 and made the biggest jump of any team ranked.

The Saint Louis Billikens debuted at #25 in the Coaches Poll and #23 in the AP, after an 11 point win over Boston College, a 12 point win over Villanova and a 20 point victory against Oklahoma. This is the first time since 1993-94 that SLU has appeared in the national rankings.

The holiday season is in full swing as far as tourism is concerned, and the head of Missouri’s tourism department says there are events beginning already.

Tourism Director Katie Steele Danner says holiday events in Branson, such as its music showcases, have been recognized across the nation as “must-see” during the holiday. Danner says it’s not only religious events that draw people to the state, but the hunting season in Missouri is very popular.

She says events at Missouri’s wineries draw large crowds. Towns such as Hermann have traditional French and German Christmas celebrations. Danner says the tourism website has a calendar of all holiday events. Click on the picture to see that calendar.

Tigers headed to the Bronx “Zou?”

If Oklahoma State is left out of the BCS national championship game, a trip to Fiesta Bowl is in order for the Cowboys as long as they can handle Oklahoma this Saturday. How will the rest of the Big 12 bowl games shape up and where does Missouri fit in that mix with a record of 7-5 overall, 5-4 in the Big 12? How about a lovely trip to the Bronx on December 30th?

Mizzou is in line to finish no worse than in fifth place holding a tie-breaker over Texas for that position, but with the Tigers leaving for the SEC, I could see a scenario where the Big 12 doesn’t lobby much for Missouri to play in a warm weather bowl game.
