Plan lays out new direction for St. Louis VA hospital (audio)

The VA Medical Center cancelled surgeries at its John Cochran division in February after instruments there were found to not be sterile.  This followed a 2010 report that said as many as 1,800 veterans may have been exposed to HIV and Hepatitis at the facility.

Now a plan has been released called “Gateway to the Future,” aimed at addressing issues at Cochran.  The House Veterans’ Affairs Committee directed the creation of that plan, and member Russ Carnahan says he’s pleased with the effort.  He says he’ll be watching closely to make sure it is implemented well.

Carnahan has met again with veterans at a forum in St. Louis and says the feedback he’s heard from them has been positive, but he’s awaiting results of a patient survey that are due out next month.  In the past, he says Cochran VA had ranked lowest in some of those ratings.

Surgeries resumed at Cochran  in March.

National Guard deployed to Egypt (AUDIO)

The Missouri National Guard has spent 2011 fighting natural disasters from blizzards to floods, but now members are headed to Egypt to help keep the peace

Nearly 100 citizen soldiers boarded a bus and headed to their final training site before joining the United Nation’s peace keeping mission on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Major General Stephen Danner says the guardsmen will be setting up clinics and assisting in any way needed, but this will not be like any other mission the guard has deployed.

The training was more combat focused than for other missions, in case violence breaks out. Normally, Missouri National Guardsmen go to the Middle East on the Agribusiness Development Team, which teaches local farmers how to farm food and livestock instead of drugs. The Support Battalion will return in a year.

Schweich denies he filed suit against Nixon’s disaster withholdings for personal reasons, blasts Post Dispatch editorial (VIDEO)

Auditor Tom Schweich is blasting an editorial in the St. Louis Post Dispatch that says his lawsuit over the Governor’s budget withholdings to help Joplin rebuild is based on personal vendetta.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ66YUd995E

Schweich says the Post ignores the media’s responsibility to present the facts clearly to the public. He quotes…

“That ‘Mr. Schweich wants the courts and public to believe his budget is more important than helping a city rebuild from one of the worst natural disasters in our state’s history…’”

“That is blatant dishonesty,” Schweich fires back. “It is corrupt, it is dishonest, it is libelous, it is false and it is a tremendous disservice to the people of Missouri who have to read junk like that when the Post Dispatch knows darn well just reading the lawsuit that is not what this lawsuit is about.”

Governor Nixon has cut about $150 million dollars from the state budget for disaster recovery. Schweich says Nixon does not have the authority to make that unilateral decision and has filed a lawsuit to stop him.

I’m joined by Justin Hall who works for the Score out of Green Bay, Wisconsin. We both interview each other, for his show The Homestretch, and for my Pressbox Podcast.

We talk about the differences between in season acquisitions between the two teams. Free agent first basemen and the outlook for the rest of this season and 2012 for both NL Central teams.
