Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder hit a three run homer and Roy Halladay and the National League pitching staff held an American League lineup depleted because of no-shows to just six hits for a 5-1 win giving the upcoming NL Pennant winners home field advantage for the World Series.
Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez, who was runner up in the Home Run Derby, gave the AL a 1-0 lead in the fourth with his solo homer to right center off Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee. Fielder responded in the bottom of the fourth with his three run shot off Rangers lefty C.J. Wilson.
More bad news for the AL squad. Boston pitcher Josh Beckett warmed up, but didn’t pitch because of a sore knee. Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera left after hurting the oblique muscle in his side while swinging. In all, 16 of the 84 selected All-Stars did not appear, 13 of those from the AL. In addition they were without the services of pitchers Justin Verlander, Felix Hernandez, and CC Sabathia who all pitched Sunday.
