A man is dead after a confrontation with a Battlefield police officer and two Greene County deputies. The sheriff says in a news release the officer called for backup to deal with a man at Cherokee Trail of Tears Park. City Administrator Rick Hess says the man, clad only in underwear, was running around.

Pepper spray and a Taser were used on the man, with no effect. He was finally subdued and taken to Cox South Hospital in Springfield, where he died a few hours later.

According to Sheriff Jim Arnott in a news release, the deputies are on routine paid leave right now, thought the man was on a controlled substance.

KTTS in Springfield contributed to this report.
