Blunt, Chamber of Commerce push for St. Louis China hub (AUDIO)

Senator Blunt says after the flooding subsides, one of his main focuses will be on building Missouri’s economy.

Making St. Louis a hub for imports from China has been debated at length in the legislature, but has yet to happen. Senator Blunt and the Missouri Chamber of Commerce say taking advantage of that opportunity is going to give Missouri’s economy a huge boost. He says he talked in St. Louis with some people from China about making the hub happen.

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce says they would like to see a decision made on it in a special session of the legislature this summer, if one happens. President Dan Mehan says this opportunity is too important to pass up. Mehan says the conditions are perfect for St. Louis to be the hub: It’s central in the Mid-West, the airport has the capacity and Missouri agriculture has a large export volume.

Mehan says it’s dissapointing that it didn’t pass through the legislature this year. He says the main reason it didn’t pass was political fighting and not opposition to the issue.

Blunt says the United States workforce is one tenth of the Chinese workforce, but our international exports are about the same. He says that another way to boost the economy is  opening fair trade agreements with other countries like Panama, Columbia and Korea.

Blunt says Agribusiness Team will stay in Afghanistan as long as its safe (AUDIO)

Senator Blunt says as the President withdraws troops from Afghanistan, he will look closely at how long to keep Missouri’s troops there. The National Guard’s Agribusiness Development Team Five is there now, and Blunt says he’ll keep teams doing noncombat missions there as long as they’re safe, because the work they’re doing is important.

He says he doesn’t mean to say these Agribusiness troops are not soldiers, but if there aren’t enough troops to protect them while they’re teaching Afghan farmers, then they can’t do their jobs well.

The team is trained to help Afghani farmers learn how to plant crops, raise livestock and find clean sources of water. He says moving the Afghan farmers away from growing drugs and toward growing crops and raising livestock is the best way to help them build a stronger country. The Agribusiness Development team started in Missouri.

Springfield Attorney’s daughter suing mother for his death

Testimony in the wrongful death lawsuit centered around prominent Springfield attorney Rolland Comstock is underway. His daughter took the stand talking about her mother’s anger over Comstock’s gay lovers and the fact she felt slighted out of a big house and money after the divorce.

Comstock’s daughter is suing her mother, accusing her of taking part in his shooting death four years ago at his home. No one’s ever been charged with the crime.

Testimony consumed most of the day Tuesday. Comstock was found shot to death in his home near McDaniel Lake four years ago.  His daughter says her mother played a role in his death. She claims her mother was jealous.
