Branson landmark sold at auction

The Grand Palace in Branson has a new owner. Taney County court records indicate the vacant building has been sold at auction for just under 5.5 million dollars.

The courthouse sale was ordered after the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation became trustee when the bank that held the mortgage closed in 2008. An agent for Kingdom Wealth Builders says plans call for theater to re-open following renovation.

Springfield Cards contribute in AA All-Star game

The Texas League held its All-Star game Wednesday night in San Antonio. The AA affiliates for both the Cardinals (Springfield) and Royals (Northwest Arkansas) are in this league and had players representing the North team. The South won the game 3-2 before a crowd of 6,121.

Franklin cut by the Cardinals

Before Wednesday night’s game in Baltimore, the Cardinals cut struggling relief pitcher Ryan Franklin. In this previous four starts, Franklin gave up nine runs in six innings of work and eight extra base hits. His troubles have been all year.

Cards win on Carp’s complete game

Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter came up big on a night when the bullpen was shorthanded. He scattered seven hits for his second complete game of the season and Colby Rasmus homered on consecutive nights to help the Cardinals win 5-1 Wednesday night over the Baltimore Orioles.

Carpenter (3-7) won his second straight start by striking out five, walking one and giving up just one extra-base hit, an RBI double to Nick Markakis in the third inning.

Rasmus hit a two-run shot in the second giving St. Louis a 2-0 lead. It was his third in five games and No. 8 on the year. St. Louis made it 4-0 in the third. Nick Punto doubled and scored on a double by Skip Schumaker, who then scored on a sac fly from Lance Berkman. David Freese added insurance in the fifth with an RBI single.

Smoking decreasing in Missouri (AUDIO)

The Centers for Disease Control find a significant decline in the number of smokers in Missouri. The Centers’ new study looks at people who smoke every day as well as social smokers–those who light up a cigar occasionally after a good meal or those who smoke at social events. Everyday smokers have dropped from 23 percent in 2003 to less than 17 percent last year. And the percentage of those who smoke at any time during the year has dorpped from more thnn 27 percent in 2003 to 21 percent last year. [Read more...]
