Missouri State University President James Cofer has announced he’s stepping down after serving just one year. Cofer says a series of recent problems on campus had nothing to do with his decision to resign.

Cofer admitted he was surprised to find out all the problems he would have to handle when he arrived. MSU’s general counsel, Clif Smart, is the interim president. The search for a new president won’t begin until a new board of governors is selected.

Cofer returns to teaching in the fall of 2012 as a tenured faculty member in the College of Business Administration.
