The EPA is cautioning cleanup workers in Joplin to be careful with lead-based paint. The agency says lead dust stirred up by such things as sanding, cutting, and demolition can cause hazards to children and pregnant women during cleanup and repair work. Lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978.

The EPA has closed its drop-off site for hazardous waste, white goods, and electronic equipment in Joplin. The city’s drop-off site remains open. The city site had been taking only non-hazardous materials but will now take hazardous stuff, too.
