Senator Blunt says those who were forced to evacuate their northwest Missouri homes because of rising Missouri River water should be covered under their flood insurance even though it was a man-made disaster. He compared the situation to those affected by the blowout of the Birds Point Levee in the southeast.

There, the Federal Emergency Management Agency paid even though it was a decision by the Army Corps of Engineers and not a natural disaster.

In response to the claim that FEMA is telling those who bought flood insurance after June 1 their insurance is no good, Blunt says he’s not sure what the final outcome will be. He says he’s sympathetic to the argument that people can’t wait until they’re asked to evacuate to buy insurance, but at the same time, he says he’ll fight FEMA for those who have legitimate claims of trying to protect their homes.
