Senator Blunt says federal agencies need to remain active in this year of disasters in Missouri. But he thinks at  least one more should become more active..

May began with flooding in southeast Missouri.  Tornadoes ripped through southern and part of central Missouri later in the month with the Joplin tornado the worst.  But now north Missouri is facing a flood caused by rain and snow in Montana and the Dakotas. All of that water is headed our way.

Blunt tells fellow Senators the breaching of the Bird’s Point levee in southeast Missouri only added another 130,000 flooded acres to the spring damage. He estimates a total of one-half million acres are under water.

Blunt says he’s been told at least two dozen Missouri River levees will be overtopped within two weeks, a number that might increase to 50 this summer.  He says the Department of Agriculture needs to get more engaged in rehabilitating land and restoring damaged levees.

Blunt says he’s still like to see 100 percent federal reimbursement for Joplin tornado recovery. The federal government is committed to 90 percent.
