James Clampitt filed for bankruptcy after being charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony leaving the scene after the June 2010 death of Mexico resident Richard Cobb.

Clampitt filed in January, and that put a stop on a wrongful death civil suit filed by Cobb’s family.

Clampitt struck Cobb, who was riding a lawnmower, with his SUV while reading a text message. Cobb died in a Columbia hospital three days after the accident. The criminal case is expected to start in July.
