Kyle McClellan became the NL’s first six-game winner tossing eight strong innings in a 4-2 win over the Houston Astros on Thursday.

Backup catcher Gerald Laird made his 10th start of the season and had a two-run double and Allen Craig homered in a three-hit game as the cleanup batter for injured Matt Holliday.

The Cardinals jumped a half-game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds after they lost to Pittsburgh and are a season-best seven games over .500 at 26-19.
