The state senate has started discussing new restrictions on late term abortions, with indications the discussion could be an arduous one. Senator Rob Mayer is carrying the proposal from a national pro-life group that prohibits abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy if a doctor determines the fetusĀ  can survive outside the womb on its own or with life support.

The bill allows abortions if the mother’s physical health or life is in danger.Ā  But Mayer refuses to support provisions involving the mother’s mental health—an issue for opponents.

Mayer indicates little willingness to make any substantial changes.Ā  Justus and others indicate little willingness to sit down and let the bill pass.
