The man charged in the Tucson, Arizona shooting rampage that killed six people and injured 13 others, including Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords, is being sent to Springfield.

An Arizona judge has ordered that Jared Loughner undergo a mental evaluation at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield before the end of April. Authorities say he could be held for up to 30 days.

Loughner’s lawyers have specifically asked for assurances that the exam will not be a review of their clients sanity, but limited to whether Loughner is competent to stand trial. U.S. District Judge Larry Burns has agreed to that, and also agrees that the Springfield facility is the best place for the exam. Burns acknowledges that moving Loughner is inconvenient for defense attorneys, but is unavoidable; the evaluation will be videotaped and provided for both the prosecution and defense, and Loughner’s defense will be able to visit him in Springfield.
