The proposal to let St. Louis manage its own police department for the first time since the Civil War has not been able to get to a vote in the state senate. Governors appoint boards to manage the departments in St. Louis and Kansas City, the only cities in Missouri where the departments are not managed by the local government. .
Opponents, however, worry that turning the department over to the city will lead to more corruption.Â
An effort to add the Kansas City police department to the bill has been ruled out of order. It’s not clear when the senate will return to the measure.
