Lance Berkman had a nice debut for the Cardinals. He went 2 for 2 including a solo home run to lead off the second inning, but the Cardinals dropped their Grapefruit League opener 6-3 to the Florida Marlins.

Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday each went 0 for 2 and left two men on base. Ryan Theriot walked and Gerald Laird doubled as the newcomers all reached base.
Raul Valdez made the start for the Cardinals. He is one of the pitchers that they are looking at for that fifth spot in the rotation, but he got tagged for four runs on five hits in his two innings of work.
On Tuesday, the Cardinals play the Marlins again and Chris Carpenter will pitch for two innings.
