General manager John Mozeliak made the announcement late Wednesday morning that starting pitcher Adam Wainwright was heading to St. Louis for an examination on his throwing elbow.

Mozeliak said it was most likely ligament damage and while he wouldn’t really comment further until an examination is done later today, he did say that when you are talking about ligament damage in a pitcher’s elbow, it “usually results in” Tommy John surgery.

Not to jump too far ahead, but if that is the case, then Wainwright would be gone for the entire season. No doubt a long trip to the DL is in line for the 29 year old pitcher.
