With all of the focus on the bad weather, we missed an important birthday yesterday. Frank Buckles, the last living United States World War I veteran, turned 110. Buckles still lives on his farm in West Virginia. He was born in Bethany, Mo. His family moved to southwest Missouri’s Vernon County in 1910. He enlisted in the Army when he was only 16, and wound up driving ambulances in France. During World War II, he was a Japanese prisoner of war.
