Four die in southwest Missouri boating accident

Four southwest Missouri residents died in a boating accident on the Niangua River in the Lead Mine Conservation area.

The State Highway Patrol reports a Dallas County Conservation agent responded to cries for help up river and found 68-year-old David L. Dixon of Fair Grove clinging to a capsized john boat. Though flown to a Springfield hospital by helicopter, Dixon died later. Investigators found, 43-year-old Hubert “Eugene” Highfill and his 11-year-old son, Jesse, dead at the scene. 62-year-old Doyle “Pete” Cowin apparently died responding to the accident. Family and friends welcome the 135th Military History Detachment home

A 4-member Missouri National Guard unit that documented efforts in Afghanistan has returned home.

“We’d go out with the units, embed with the units. Whatever mission they do we do. We’ve been on dismounted patrols; we’ve been on infantry outside the wire. We’ve been on route clearance missions. We’ve been on bridge reconstruction team missions, agriculture development missions. We embed with the units, we record what they do, interview their soldiers; get the stories their soldiers have. Then we go back through and gather all the data for the engagements, for all the battles. We put together reports to make sure their contribution is remembered forever,” said Major Donald Lathan of the 135th Military History Detachment. [Read more...]

Blues Backes Drafted For All Star Game

For the second time in his career, David Backes of the St. Louis Blues had to wait for his name to be called as the NHL All Star Game Draft was held last night in North Carolina.  Backes would be drafted in the 17th round and will play for Team Staal in both the Skills Challenge tonight and the All Star Game on Sunday afternoon. Tuition, fees going up for University of Missouri

University of Missouri curators have voted to increase tuition at the four campus system an average of 5.5%, approving a tuition hike of 6.5% for the University of Missouri-Columbia. The credit-hour cost at MU will jump from $245.60 to $261.60.

Fees are going up as well, some substantially. Fees for the school of business will jump nearly 50% next year, an equal amount the following year. Fees at the School of Journalism will rise 22%. Students in health professions will see fees increase more than 18%. Fees for engineering students will rise nearly 12%. [Read more...]
