Gov. Nixon resists calls to release school funding (AUDIO)

Governor Nixon gives no indication that he will release education funding he has withheld, despite continued calls from legislators to do so.

House Speaker Steven Tilley, a Republican from Perryville, has joined the chorus from the Missouri House, calling on Governor Nixon to release the $70 million in transportation funding he has withheld from public schools.

“I’m not saying release all the money, I just think he’s withheld far, far too much if we’re ahead of our Consensus Revenue Estimate,” Tilley tells reporters at the Capitol. “And for a guy who campaigned all around the state about providing more scholarships, about improving funding for education, he’s withholding it when the money is clearly there.” [Read more...]

Bears see JQH Arena streak snapped

Missouri State shot just 28 percent in the second half, and visiting Northern Iowa took advantage in a 60-59 come-from-behind Missouri Valley Conference win at JQH Arena late Sunday to snap the Bears’ 19-game home winning streak.

MSU (17-5, 9-2) got 18 points from Kyle Weems, 11 from Jermaine Mallett and 10 from Will Creekmore in a game the Bears led most of the way in front of a rowdy 9,901 fans.

After pulling ahead 52-44 with 10:08 to play in the game on a free throw by Nafis Ricks, Missouri State saw the Panthers reel off 12 of the next 14 points over a span of nearly six minutes to take a 56-54 advantage.

The lead would change hands four more times down the stretch, but it appeared the home club would survive the run when Weems knocked down a long two-pointer out of the left corner to give Missouri State a 59-58 lead with 18.2 seconds remaining.

UNI called timeout and set up a three-point attempt for Marc Sonnen out of the right corner. The shot missed, and Weems went up with Johnny Moran for the rebound. Weems was called for a foul, the team’s fifth of the half, which appeared to give the visitors the ball out of bounds with 5.2 seconds left. However, Moran was awarded two free throws which he made to give the Panthers a 60-59 lead.

Adam Leonard drove the distance of the floor in the final seconds, and his floater in the paint as time expired bounced out at the horn.

UNI (17-6, 8-3) was the last team to beat the Bears in their home facility, on this same date a year ago. That game too was decided on a controversial foul in the waning seconds, but the Bears responded by defending their home court for 19 consecutive games to mark their fourth-longest in school history and best since moving to Division I in 1982-83.

Missouri State was 7-for-25 from the field in the second half, but finished with a 42.3-percent effort from the field (22-for-52) and 5-for-14 (.357) from bonus distance. MSU missed just three of its 13 free throw attempts (.769) but misssed two in the final 10:08 when the Panthers were rallying.

The Bears out-rebounded the visitors by a 31-25 margin and had one more turnover (11) than UNI.

Weems and Mallett led the way with 8 rebounds each for MSU, while Mallett contributed a game-high five assists.

Backes picks up three assists in NHL All-Star game

St. Louis Blues forward David Backes, playing in his first NHL All-Star game, assisted on three goals, including two of the first four scored by his team that ended up losing 11-10.

In a new format that selected team captains, who then chose players that pit teammates on current NHL teams against each other, the action was fast and furious from the beginning as Backes’ Team Staal jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Team Lidstrom. Team Staal stil had a 6-4 lead, but actually found themselves trailing 7-6 after two periods of play.

Backes’ third assist came with :33 left to make the game interesting, but his team failed to get another shot on goal. Backes also competed in the skills competition and registered a 96.9 mph slap shot.

Partial helmet law repeal ready for senate debate (AUDIO)

The annual effort to let most motorcyclists go without helmets has started in the legislature. Missouri has had a helmet law since 1967. The last time the legislature passed a repeal or partial repeal was 2009.  Governor Nixon vetoed it.

It’s a tourism issue, say advocates of letting riders older than 21 go without helmets if they want to.  Most of our neighboring states don’t have helmet laws, they say, and people from non-helmet states don’t come to Missouri because they have to wear helmets here.   [Read more...]

Mizzou knocked out by Texas

The 7th ranked Texas Longhorns jumped out to an 11-0 lead and didn’t allow a basket until Kim English hit a three pointer 5:40 into the game as the Longhorns battered the 13th ranked Tigers 71-58 in Austin, TX.

The Tigers needed the big guys, Ricardo Ratliffe and Laurence Bowers to step up, but foul trouble and elbows got them in trouble. Ratliffe was outmanned early in the game and was on the bench with two fouls in the first 5:16 of the game.
