St. Louis Blues forward David Backes, playing in his first NHL All-Star game, assisted on three goals, including two of the first four scored by his team that ended up losing 11-10.

In a new format that selected team captains, who then chose players that pit teammates on current NHL teams against each other, the action was fast and furious from the beginning as Backes’ Team Staal jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Team Lidstrom. Team Staal stil had a 6-4 lead, but actually found themselves trailing 7-6 after two periods of play.

Backes’ third assist came with :33 left to make the game interesting, but his team failed to get another shot on goal. Backes also competed in the skills competition and registered a 96.9 mph slap shot.
