The Jackson County prosecutor says Missouri’s “castle doctrine” is for someone can use deadly force if they reasonably believe it’s necessary to defend themselves against the unlawful use of force against them. But it does not apply to killing someone who is stealing a go-kart from the back yard.

That’s why he’s charged Kansas City resident Oscar Cerna with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Cerna is charged with using a rifle to kill a man who was seen leaving his back yard with the go-kart last weekend.
