The lawyer who attacked the 2006 voter photo-ID law and won, says he has the state supreme court behind him as he threatens a suit against the voter photo-ID bills being studied by a state senate committee. The committee is considering a bill requiring voter s to produce a nonexpired Missouri driver’s license; a nonexpired non-driver’s license, military ID, or a document issued by the United States or Missouri government with a signature the voter can match when signing for a ballot.

Lawyer Burt Newman, who took the last case without pay, says the legislature is again moving to impair a vested right, a fatal flaw.

Supporters of the bills say they’re open to talking about ways to improve their bills. Other than the sponsoring senators, no supporters of the idea testified before the committee.  But several opponents did.
