The grant that has paid for the Kansas City police department’s cold-case squad investigating sex crimes is about to run out and will not be renewed.

The squad has cleared more than 140 cases, identified 25 serial rapists and has arrested seven of them. The National Institute for Justice, which provided the grant, says it had 130 applicants for its 27 grants this year and didn’t have enough money to re-fund the Kansas City effort.
