New MO law affects fire risk of cigarettes (AUDIO)

A new law goes into effect January 1st that will change the design of many cigarettes sold in Missouri.

Missouri will now require all cigarettes sold in the state to be certified as ‘fire safe.’ Assistant State Fire Marshall Greg Carrell explains the difference.

“The most common technology used in this is to wrap the cigarettes with either two or three thin bands of a less porous paper. If it’s left unattended, the burning tobacco reaches one of these speed bumps and should self-extinguish,” Carrell said. [Read more...]

President Truman referred to his return to Missouri as “being promoted to private life.”   Senator Christopher Bond is experiencing the same promotion.

The biggest factor in this game was rebounding. The Monarchs came into this game with one of the biggest rebounding differentials in the nation and the Tigers were only outrebounded by one…30-29.

Program putting youth to work in parks renewed

Governor Nixon has announced he plans to renew the state’s State Parks Youth Corps Program. The program uses federal funds to pay Missourians between the ages of 17 and 21 to do work in nearly all of the 85 state parks and historic sites. Scott Holste, the Governor’s spokesman, says there’s a wide range of tasks.

“During the last year, the State Park Youth Corps workers put in more than 187,000 hours at the parks. They put roofs on 25 buildings, they used 2,000 gallons of paint; painting buildings and fences. They blazed almost 650 miles of trail in 58 state parks and they did research and cataloguing of animal and plant life, as well as helping with event planning,” Holste said. [Read more...]
