Convicted murderer Dale Helmig is out of prison on bond while a judge’s order that his conviction be overturned is being appealed to a higher court.

Hours after a state appeals court ordered him released, Helmig left the Crossroads prison at Cameron to live with his brother in Rocky Mount.

Helmig had been in prison for 16 years after being convicted of murdering his mother. But a northwest Missouri circuit judge says his conviction was a “miscarriage of justice.” Attorney General Chris Koster is appealing that finding and is critical of the order allowing Helmig released on only $5,000 bond.
