Truman State’s  five-set comeback came up just short on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the 2010 NCAA tournament, as sixth-seeded Abilene Christian (Texas) held on for a 3-2 (-14, -18, 19-25, 19-25, 15-10) victory against the No. 3 Bulldogs.

Truman closes its 2010 season with a 25-8 record and a third place finish in the MIAA. The squad loses four seniors, Allison Barker, Casey Bruno, Jenna Novelli and Ashley Petak, but will return four starters and three top reserves for the 2011 season.

Northwest lost a hard-fought 3-0 match to Washburn in the first round of the NCAA tournament Thursday in Warrensburg. Sara Falcone led the Bearcats with 12 kills and 12 digs for her 10th double-double this season.  This was the Bearcats first-ever tournament appearance, while Washburn returned plenty of post-season experience into this first round. Northwest finishes the season 15-15.

The top-seeded Jennies bounced back from an 8-1 deficit in the opening game and went on to post a 3-0 sweep on their home court over St. Mary’s, the automatic qualifier out of the Heartland Conference. The Jennies now advance to the semifinals to face Emporia State on Friday night at 7:30.
